Automattic Design on product experience design
At Automattic Design, we’ve developed a set of principles and processes to help us create the best digital product experiences. As a 100% distributed organization, we often share through the written word, so we’ve been lucky to document the evolution of our process and approach. This guide has been synthesized from the collected writings of our team over the last couple of years. It reflects a diverse but aligned perspective on what it means to create great products at Automattic and beyond.
Material Design Checkpoint
In parallel to the content of this book, there are several checkpoints along the way that illustrate the principles of Google Material Design. Use the extra printed materials that come with your book to build an understanding of how the architectural aspects of Material Design work and behave. Visit our collaboration site to learn more.
The accompanying thick paper card exists at 6dp in elevation with respect to the pages of your printed book. Use the adhesive sticker on the back of the square thin sheet to paste it into your book in comparison to the main page which sits at 0dp — whereas it sits at 4dp. Elevation in Material Design is measured as the distance between Material surfaces. The distance from the front of one Material surface to the front of another is measured along the z-axis in density-independent pixels (dps) and depicted (by default) using shadows.
